Global Register of Migratory Species
Summarising Knowledge about Migratory Species for Conservation |
|||
|
The number of migratory animals can only be estimated at present (likely between 5,000 and 10,000 species). To help eliminate this deficit, the UNEP/CMS Secretariat initiated the development of a database in 1997, in co-operation with the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn, funded by the Federal Environment Ministry and scientifically supported by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation The migratory status has been assessed for 4,430 vertebrate species, and more than 1,000 GIS species distribution mapsare available published on CD — more... GIS maps have now been published at the
new website groms.gbif.org, resulting from a cooperation between CMS and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
Background information and the database available below provides more detailed, fully refeerenced information on migratory vertebrate species.
