4.3.1 — Mammals

The taxonomic reference list by Wilson & Reeder (1993) and the compilation of Rice (1998) for marine mammals form the taxonomic backbone for GROMS and CMS. These sources contain distribution data, but do not inform about migratory behaviour. According to habitat and movement type, the following major groups of migratory mammals were differentiated:

The bibliography on migratory behaviour of these groups is extremely inhomogenous and widely scattered. Most studies concentrate on single species, the selection of which seems to be driven by certain research traditions, regional preferences and accessibility. The best summarising overview is still the extensive compilation of Baker (1978). As shown in the following sections, considerable knowledge gaps were detected within bats, and small whales.
