2 — Background: the current state of knowledge about migratory species

In many parts of the world, very little detailed information actually exists about biological resources. Even the most basic information about which species are present and how they are distributed is often lacking or very patchy. (Olivieri et al. 1995, p. 665)

This database project was preceded by an analysis of the state of knowledge about migratory species, including digital resources available on the World Wide Web and from other database projects. In addition, an analysis of user needs was performed using a questionnaire, and a continuing dialogue with potential users and those running related projects was initiated. In the following, the results of these preliminary studies are summarised and the consequences for database design outlined.
