Migration: partial some local movements probable

Verbreitungskarte von Vanellus melanopterus Resident and intra-African migrant: migratory in most of E Africa, but sedentary in Ethiopia; migratory in South Africa. In Aug-Sept, after breeding, birds in Kenya migrate to lower altitudes, 1500-2000 m lower, returning in Jan-Apr. In South Africa most birds descend to coastal plains after breeding (Apr-Aug); occasional stragglers reach W Cape. Migrates both at night and during day. During non-breeding season, occurs in flocks up to 50 birds, occasionally thousands, and possibly up to 10,000 prior to migration.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
