Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) Family: Delphinidae Order: Cetacea print version
Bottlenosed dolphin Grand dauphin Delfín mular Großer Tümmler
Migration: partial

Verbreitungskarte von Tursiops truncatus In the North Atlantic, common bottlenose dolphins are seen inshore during summer months off New England, offshore as far as north an Nova Scotia, and have been recorded off Norway and the Lofoten Islands. Bottlenose dolphins occur as far south as Tierra del Fuego, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Limits to the species' range appear to be temperature related, either directly or indirectly, through distribution of prey. Off the coasts of North America they tend to inhabit waters with surface temperature ranging from about 10 to 32 C. At the northern limit of the species' range in the western North Atlantic, they are seasonally migratory, with a more southerly distribution in the winter.   (Wells RS, Scott MD, 2002)
