Migrates on broad fronts all across North America. After breeding presumably moving SE down Atlantic states,
though some may use direct transoceanic passage from New England to E South America, including west
Amazonian rivers. Females precede males and juveniles southward, also arrive first at breeding territories. In
Venezuela, unlike many other wader species, more numerous in N spring than in autumn. N migration from
south America more westerly, suggesting more use of interior route through USA and absence of transoceanic
movement then. Usually migrates singly. Not infrequent vagrant to Europe, and has nested in Scotland
