Tringa macularia Linnaeus, 1766 Actitis macularia Family: sandpipers, snipes Order: Charadriiformes print version
Spotted sandpiper Chevalier grivelé Andarrios maculado Drosseluferläufer
Migration: intercontinental many non-breeders remain in wintering areas

Verbreitungskarte von Tringa macularia Migrates on broad fronts all across North America. After breeding presumably moving SE down Atlantic states, though some may use direct transoceanic passage from New England to E South America, including west Amazonian rivers. Females precede males and juveniles southward, also arrive first at breeding territories. In Venezuela, unlike many other wader species, more numerous in N spring than in autumn. N migration from south America more westerly, suggesting more use of interior route through USA and absence of transoceanic movement then. Usually migrates singly. Not infrequent vagrant to Europe, and has nested in Scotland   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
