Migration: intercontinental overland on broad fronts, singly or in small flocks, migrates at night, immatures stay in wintering areas during summer

Verbreitungskarte von Tringa hypoleucos Migratory. Many move to S wintering areas, though some stay in N maritime climatic zone (British Is, Mediterranean, Japan). Moves overland on broad fronts, even across deserts and mountains, usually singly or in small flocks. European population mainly winter in W Africa, and basically moves SSW-SW from mid-Jul to Aug, juveniles following one month alter; moves N from late Mar to Apr .Many Norwegian birds cross Britain, Swedish birds cross W Germany, Finnish cross E Germany. Wintering populations in E, C & S Africa presumably originate CIS. E Asian birds move through Korea, Japan (especially during migration), Hong Kong (both migration), peninsular Malaysia, Wallacea and New Guinea.
