Southern populations are migratory (Pereyra 1969). Thus, in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, roughwings are largely
absent between mid February and mid August (Belton 1985). Migrant ruficollis from the South have been
recorded in northern South America, including Surinam and Colombia, in the austral winter, but the full extent
of their wintering range is not clear. Northern forms are resident. (Turner A, Rose C, 1989)
