Migration: intercontinental influenced by rainfall, increased numbers in Australia in wet years

Verbreitungskarte von Stiltia isabella Movements influenced by rainfall patterns, with reports of greatly increased numbers arriving S Australia to breed in unusual wet years, when range extends further SW. Occurs in southern half of Australia mostly in austral spring and summer, most numerous in New South Wales in Oct-Feb. Only two breeding reports N of Australia, from Trans-Fly region of New Guinea. Migrates N as far as New Guinea, and W to Sulawesi, Borneo, Bali and Java; arrives at Darwin, Northern Territory, between Apr and Jun, and departs in Nov and Dec; in Papua New Guinea, occurs Mar-Dec, mostly May-Nov.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
