Rostratula benghalensis (Linnaeus, 1758) Family: painted-snipes Order: Charadriiformes print version
Painted snipe Rhynchée peinte Aguatero Bengali Goldschnepfe
Migration: partial short migrations in NE China, NW India, Japan; opportunistic in N African tropics

Verbreitungskarte von Rostratula benghalensis Mainly sedentary in Asia, and in Egypt. Short migrations reported from NE China, NW India (Kashmir) and Japan. Within Africa performs seasonal, but irregular, short distance movements, responding to feeding and breeding habitat requirements, particularly in N tropics. Largely nomadic in Australia. Usually remains solitary in non-breeding seasons, but small, occasional large flocks may gather, probably due to scarcity of suitable habitat. Accidental in Afghanistan, Israel (where recently found breeding), Oman, Somalia, Pemba and Zanzibar, and Tibet and Tasmania; listed for Turkey, but probably erroneously.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
