short migrations in NE China, NW India, Japan; opportunistic in N African tropics |
Mainly sedentary in Asia, and in Egypt. Short migrations reported from NE China, NW India (Kashmir) and
Japan. Within Africa performs seasonal, but irregular, short distance movements, responding to feeding and
breeding habitat requirements, particularly in N tropics. Largely nomadic in Australia. Usually remains solitary
in non-breeding seasons, but small, occasional large flocks may gather, probably due to scarcity of suitable
habitat. Accidental in Afghanistan, Israel (where recently found breeding), Oman, Somalia, Pemba and Zanzibar,
and Tibet and Tasmania; listed for Turkey, but probably erroneously. (del Hoyo J, Elliott A,
