Verbreitungskarte von Phalaropus tricolor Migratory. After breeding, adults migrate to large hypersaline lakes in W North America to moult and fatten up, attracted to abundance of food; up to 600,000 recorded on Great Salt L. Females depart from breeding areas and arrive at staging sites by mid-Jun, followed by males and finally juveniles. Adults migrate across Pacific to coastal W South America and thence S through Andes; females depart late Jul to late Aug, males 2 weeks later; juveniles migrate after males, overland on broad front to N South America; adults arrive in South America from early Aug, juveniles late Aug, and at wintering sites late Sept to early Nov, occurring on lakes in concentrations of up to 500,000. Main wintering areas in Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. On spring migration crosses highlands of South America in mid-Mar, then Central America or Gulf of Mexico and interior USA; arrives at breeding areas from late Apr to early May. Migrates nocturnally in large flocks. A dead specimen found at Alexander I (71 S) is most southerly wader record.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
