Verbreitungskarte von Pluvialis squatarola Migratory. Departs from breeding ground Jul-Sept; juveniles leave 5-6 weeks after adults; southward movements take place into Nov, and possibly later. Return migration starts Apr, and most N wintering birds do not leave until early Jun; first departures from South Africa in Feb. Returns to tundra late May to early Jun. Part of Australian population flies W, down W Palearctic coasts to W Africa; other birds migrate S along E Mediterranean flyway to E & S Africa, and to S Asia and Australia; regular migrant through Korea; Japan and NE China; birds in E Atlantic flyaway come from all of Russia, but possibly also from E Canadian Arctic; birds depart from Taymir in W & S directions. Nearctic population mainly winters on coasts of North and South Americas; flies N in broad front across S North America, up Atlantic and Pacific coasts and Mississippi valley; on southward Journey, route further E. In Old World, females winter further S than males; juveniles and other non-breeders stay in winter quarters or migrate part way N in their first summer.
