Adulta and young leave nesting area shortly after young fledge. Some populations remain close to breeding grounds (e.g. Snares, Anvers I). In some places 1st-year birds found near colony. Post-breeding flocks may migrate long distances from S part of range, being absent Apr-Oct. Race georgiae common non-breeding visitor to South America; arrives mid-Apr and moults, then leaves mid-Oct. Birds from Antarctica moult on breeding grounds. Race tristanensis also winters in South Africa, where vittata vagrant. Vagrant to Australia.
