Post-breeding dispersal from nesting islands Apr or May (sometimes late Mar or Jul), largely offshore to W, and to N; individual pairs and their flightless offspring swim on water. Movement to wintering areas probably slow, with arrival Jun to early Jul (peak numbers Jul-Aug) off C Californian coast, where large numbers remain on outer continental shelf and fewer in similar habitats N to Washington and S British Columbia until late Nov or early Dec. Return to breeding locations probably Nov-Jan.
