Migration: intercontinental large flocks in autumn

Buteo swainsoni

Highly migratory. Main non-breeding grounds (boreal winter) in Argentina; migration followsa land route through C America, with some scattered wintering grounds in other open habitats of Neotropics. Some autumn migrant flocks in C America in 1000´s; total of 400,000 recently recorded over Veracruz, E Mexico. May fly without feeding between S USA and winter quarters in South America. Increasingly some birds winter in Florida, California and also Texas.
