Migration: partial extent unclear

Verbreitungskarte von Porzana fusca Largely resident, but migratory in some regions. Status of some populations unclear, especially on Asian mainland (demarcation on map between resident and seasonal occurrences is largely hypothetical). N populations of erythrothorax move S to winter in S China (S of Yangtze R) and Indochina; this race is summer breeding visitor to Japan (May-Oct), small numbers also wintering in S, in Sri Lanka numbers of zeylonica augmented by migrants which arrive Oct-Nov and leave Mar-Apr. Probably resident throughout Wallacean range; scarce winter visitor to Borneo. Race phaeopyga resident in Ryukyu Is. Vagrant to Christmas I (Indian Ocean) with 2 specimen, Aug and Sept.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
