Migration: intercontinental spends most of the year along ice edge

Verbreitungskarte von Pagophila eburnea Spends most of year along ice edge, most birds dispersing only as far as edge of pack ice; in summer may even wander N of breeding range. Outside breeding season, most of the breeding population concentrates in Labrador Sea along ice edge of Davis Strait (between Greenland and Baffin I), where largest numbers gather in spring in hooded seal ( Pagophilus groenlandicus ) whelping area; some winter in Bering Sea, also concentrated along ice edge. Odd individuals winter casually S to N Europe and N USA, accidentally as far as North Carolina; at least one New Jersey record involved as ship-assisted individual.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
