broad front, many non-breeders remain in wintering areas |
Migratory. Moves over broad front, in spring with relatively few staging areas, often inland, e.g. in Hungary and
Netherlands; in autumn no concentrated staging. Most N European and NW Russian phaeopus migrate to
coastal W Africa; return migration sometimes involves long diagonal Sahara crossing from W African coast and
some transcontinental migration in S Africa. Icelandic birds fly over W Britain and some make long flights over
water, directly to Africa. Race variegatus moves through Japan, coastal China, Korea, Hong Kong and
Taiwan to wintering grounds in SE Asia and Australia. Alaskan hudsonicus migrates down Pacific coast;
Canadian populations over broad inland front to Canadian Maritime Provinces and New England and S down
coast, mainly to N & W South America. Migrates through NW Europe early Jul to late Aug, and late Apr to late
May; arrives in Africa and E Australia late Jul to early Oct and departs from Apr. Many non-breeders remain in
winter quarters all year, and all 1-year-olds probably do so. (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J
