Migrates through interior North and Central America to C South America, but during autumn also down Atlantic
coast to N South America, where fairly large numbers occur in Surinam Aug-Sept; small numbers winter locally
in S USA. Females migrate S from 2nd week of Jul, males 1 week later, and juveniles from mid-Aug; in
Manitoba young and adults move at same time. On return, overflies West Indies and Gulf of Mexico from coast
of Colombia and Venezuela, reaching USA mainly Apr; migrates N along rivers to Arctic coast; arrives at
breeding grounds from late May, males c. 2 days earlier than females. Some remain in winter quarters during
breeding season. Migrating flocks can total up to hundreds of birds. (del Hoyo J, Elliott A,
