Migration: range extension

Verbreitungskarte von Larus occidentalis Post-breeding movement to British Colombia and accidentally to peninsular Alaska, also S to the tip of Baja California and occasionally to Sonora coast of Mexico, birds from S colonies disperse, those from N colonies migrate S. Migration distance correlated with latitude, and young birds move further than adults. Farallon Is birds are mainly sedentary, adults maintaining breeding territories most of year. Young birds disperse N to areas of high oceanic productivity in summer, and move S to San Francisco Bay in winter. Dispersal of young varies from year to year, depending on food availability, but adults tend to return to the same site each winter.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
