Verbreitungskarte von Larus ichthyaetus Generally migratory, but few details. Migration recorded through NW & C China (Xinjiang, Sichuan). Locally fairly common migrant and winter visitor in Nepal. Recently found to migrate through Red Sea to islands and Ethiopian rift Valley. Some movement W to Middle East and W Mediterranean (Israel), where apparently much scarcer now than 50 years ago. Immatures may remain in wintering range. Winters mainly on Caspian Sea, with smaller numbers in Israel (rare), Ethiopia (32-111 birds in mid-1970’s), Persian Gulf, S Iran Pakistan, India and Myanmar. Occasional inland on large lakes and rivers, e.g. c. 100 at Hamin-i-Puzak, SW Afghanistan. Increasingly recorded in Europe, mostly inland; single report from E Atlantic, in Canary Is (Mar 1995)   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
