Long distance migrant. Race caurinus moves down Pacific coast, some birds inland through W USA,
wintering on coast from California to Peru; hendersoni passes E Great Plains, valley of R Mississippi and
E coast of USA, S of New York and New Jersey, and winters from the Carolinas round Gulf coast and down
both coasts of Central America to Panama; griseus moves down Atlantic coast to North Carolina and
South through Caribbean to N Brazil, while highest numbers wintering in Surinam. Small number of non-
breeders spend N summer on wintering grounds. Females leave breeding grounds from early Jul before males,
and juveniles from late Jul; birds reach N South America from mid-Aug to early Oct. Spring migration early may
