Migratory in most range. Shows leapfrog migration, with N populations moving farther to winter in tropics,
some covering 7500 km to equatorial Africa; many winter in Mediterranean, Red Sea and Persian Gulf, S to
Africa. N European breeders move to W & E Africa and Arabia, some wintering on Black and Caspian Seas.
Birds from W Europe and W Scandinavian move SW, some move SE, though numbers wintering in breeding
area have increased; British birds mainly winter off Iberia and Morocco, a few reaching Senegal coast. Siberian
race heuglini winters from Middle east and Red Sea E to Pakistan and India, with some reaching coast of
E Africa. Species is now regular through rare in North America, also wandering accidentally to Pacific
