short distance, broad front migration, faithful to wintering site |
Relatively short distance migrant. Movements in Broad front over coast and interior; beringiae probably
crosses Gulf of Alaska. Birds wintering on Pacific coast of USA (mainly Washington and Oregon) are probably
beringiae, while fedoa presumably moves via W Montana, Idaho and E Oregon to Sacramento/
San Joaquin Delta or San Francisco Bay area, and along Pacific coast southwards. During northward migration,
high numbers stage at Cheyenne Bottoms (Kansas). High degree of wintering site fidelity. N migration of
beringiae mainly late Apr and Early May, some throughout May; southward Jul-Oct. Casual in West
Indies. Traditionally said to winter S to N Chile, but only three records up to 1986, with first in 1852 and second
not till 1977; only one record up to 1986 in Colombia, where probably occurs sporadically; also said to occur in
Venezuela. (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
