Nominate paraguaiae essential sedentary, in some areas performing short seasonal movements to
permanent marshland during austral winter. Race andina moves to lower altitudes, e.g. reaching
Argentinean pampas. Race magellanica more migratory, especially on Tierra del Fuego, birds moving N
to N Argentina and Uruguay in Apr-Jul; in past mostly summer visitor to Falkland Is, but no recent evidence of
migration and some birds certainly overwinter (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
