Long distance migrant from Eurasia to W & S Africa, chiefly South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, Sept-Apr;
nomadic in winter range following swarming insect prey. On passage in Sudan, W Kenya, W Uganda, Zaire,
Angola, W Zambia, but seldom in Malawi and Zimbabwe; thousands of birds pass southward through Zaire in
Oct, and northward again in Mar. In W Africa, flocks of up to 200 birds in Nigeria, Sept and Dec-Apr. Arrival in
breeding areas usually Apr-May, departure in Sept. Much migration at high altitude, so passage often observed
from ground. Rare passage migrant through Saudi Arabia, which species probably overflies; uncommon passage
migrant through Israel along coastal plain, southward in Sept and Oct; also regular through Iran. Vagrant N and
