Gallinago media (Latham, 1787) Family: sandpipers, snipes Order: Charadriiformes print version
Great snipe Bécassine double Agachadizas real Doppelschnepfe
Migration: intercontinental few intracontinental

Verbreitungskarte von Gallinago media Migratory. Departure from breeding grounds from early Aug onwards, and wintering on flooded grasslands in African regions just after rainy season. Migrates across Turkey and down R Nile to Ethiopian plateau, arriving Aug-Sept; only rare passage visitor in Egypt, late Aug to late Oct and early Mar to mid-Apr. In Ethiopia, large numbers stay until grasslands dry up in Oct, whereafter they move S & SW, following the rains; recorded in Kenya, SW Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa from mid-Oct; 5000- 10,000 birds have been counted in Mali, in Nov. High numbers probably migrate to wetlands along Gulf of Guinea where thy stay Aug-Dec; as wetlands dry up, theses birds migrate to other, undetermined areas in Africa; moult data suggests that these birds constitute separate population. Northward migration occurs in broad front over Africa Mar-Apr, and probably oriented more to W, crossing Mediterranean, but northward migration passes largely unnoticed; males arrive in Ukraine before females; arrives on R Yenisey in early Jun. Irregularly, some birds winter in NW Europe and S Scandinavia.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
