Globicephala macrorhynchus Gray, 1846 Family: Delphinidae Order: Cetacea print version
Short-finned pilot whale Deductuer Calderón de aletas cortas Kurzflossen Grindwal
Migration: nomadising

Verbreitungskarte von Globicephala macrorhynchus Pilot whales are found on the continental shelf break, in slope waters, and in areas of high topographic relief. In general, pilot whales are nomadic, but resident populations have been documented in a few locations such as coastal California and Hawaii. Seasonal inshore/offshore movements of pilot whales are related to the distribution of squid, their favourite prey. Studies in Newfoundland and California correlated the seasonal distribution of pilot whales with spawning squid.   (Olson PA, Reilly SB, 2002)
