Migration: intercontinental main non-breeding grounds in Australia

Verbreitungskarte von Charadrius veredus Migratory. Departs from breeding grounds in Jul, males first. Main non-breeding grounds in NW & NC Australia; passage migrant in small numbers through Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Micronesia and SE Asia, Sept-Dec; migrant through E China Aug-Sept and Mar-Apr, where very abundant in Yangtze Valley; arrives Australia mid-Sept to Oct. Scarcity of records between China and Non-breeding grounds suggests non- stop flights between these two zones; recorded rather rarely in Indonesia. In Australia, shows erratic movements, apparently moving in response to rainfall and temperature; occurrence in coastal areas often associated with droughts or heatwaves. Birds may depart for Asia directly from inland areas, without visiting coast; leaves NW Australia Feb-Apr, perhaps mostly mid-Mar; present C Mongolia, immediately S of breeding grounds, from late Apr.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
