Migrates, wintering mainly off Iberia; younger birds travel further, some reaching Cape Verde Is and Brazil.
Leaves breeding areas in Aug-Sept and moves slowly S. Young birds often driven inland by autumn storms, but
otherwise species avoids coasts and can be more numerous offshore than coastal records indicate. Northward
migration in Mar-Apr; immatures may stay south or visit high latitudes in summer. Few cross to W Atlantic and
these are probably birds from Iceland, as UK ring recoveries in W Atlantic are very rare. Most birds breed with
in 1 km of birth place, but ringed birds from Shetland founded colonies in Norway, Svalbard and Russia.
