Winters mostly offshore, sometimes near-shore and coastal, usually with in breeding range. S populations
somewhat sedentary, often remaining in coastal and offshore waters adjacent to colony; N birds (Alaska) mostly
migratory, moving S to at least S British Columbia. N and inshore movements from wintering areas begin as
early as Feb-Mar, most birds reaching colonies in late Mar and Apr. (del Hoyo J, Elliott A,
