Charadrius melodus Ord, 1824 Family: plovers Order: Charadriiformes print version
Piping plover Pluvier siffleur Chorlitejo silbador Flötenregenpfeifer
Migration: intercontinental some intracontinental, fidelity to wintering site, small migrating flocks

Verbreitungskarte von Charadrius melodus Inland breeders seem to undertake non-stop autumn migration to coast of Gulf of Mexico, as suggested by lack of sightings of migrating birds inland. Coastal breeders winter from N Carolina S to Florida and in to Caribbean. Spring migration takes place late-Feb to early Apr, peaking in Mar; arrives coastal breeding grounds along Atlantic mainly late Mar to Apr, and inland late Apr to mid-May. Departure from coastal breeding grounds in Aug, and southward movements noted into Oct; inland breeders may depart as early as Jun, especially when breeding fails, but otherwise Sept; females depart first, followed by unpaired males, males with fledglings, and finally juveniles; arrives on Texas coast in two peaks, early Jul to early Aug and Oct to early Nov. Shows high degree of fidelity to wintering site. Usually migrates in small flocks of 3-6 birds.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
