Charadrius bicinctus Jardine & Selby, 1827 Family: plovers Order: Charadriiformes print version
Double-banded plover Pluvier à double collier Chorlitejo bicinchado Doppelband-Regenpfeifer
Migration: partial migrates in flocks of up to 150 birds

Verbreitungskarte von Charadrius bicinctus Nominate is partially migratory, the only plover that migrates from New Zealand to Australia; birds inland or at high altitudes, above 600, almost entirely migratory, migrate to N New Zealand, E & S Australia and Tasmania, or further afield, destination varies regionally. Coastal breeders mostly sedentary. In race exills, probably only part of population makes local movements, moving to tidal shores of Enderby I in winter, while others may remain in territories. Migrations starts Oct-Nov, when birds leave territories, and start flocking in Dec-Jan (- Apr), forming flocks of up to 150 birds; most departures for Australia occur Feb-Mar, usually from staging areas on E & S coasts of south I; birds moving to North I depart Jan-Mar. Highly site faithful on wintering grounds, some birds defending feeding territories. Returns to breeding grounds Aug to early Sept; 1 year olds appear to return later than older birds.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
