Migratory, with breeding range and winter quarters usually quite separate. Date, duration and distance of
migration can vary with southward extent of snow cover and abundance of rodents in breeding range; in certain
years, some birds fly further S than normal winter quarters. In Europe and Asia most birds leave breeding areas
from mid-Sept to early Nov, remaining in winter quarters Nov-Mar; birds return to breeding areas from late Apr
to late May, although when food supply scant may make extensive nomadic movements on arrival; may also
make movements in winter quarters, e.g. leaving areas with prolonged show cover. (del Hoyo J,
