Partially migratory. Generally in lower numbers in breeding range Oct-Apr. Individuals of race chalconota
migrate irregularly in autumn or winter NE along Gulf of Mexico coast, reaching Louisiana, Mississippi and
Florida; rarely even farther north; southward-directed migration recorded in Mexico as far as Veracruz. Race
cerviniventris has been recorded in late summer from SW Campeche (Yucatan Peninsula). Nominate birds are
presumed to winter further south within Mexico in Tabasco and Chiapas. Not reported in winter on the Pacific
