Migratory movements and winter range poorly known. Normally departs from colonies Aug to early Sept
(exodus latest in N), wintering largely in seas within breeding range where waters remain ice-free, with some S
movement into N Pacific, in frequently S to N British Columbia and N Japan (Hokkaido). Arrives back on land
at colonies from late Apr to mid-Jun, non-breeders appearing 3-4 weeks later than breeders. (del
