Migration: intracontinental faithful to breeding and wintering sites

Verbreitungskarte von Anarhynchus frontalis Migratory. Moves from breeding grounds in C South I to mudflats of estuaries and harbours on N end of North I. leaves rivers late Dec to early Feb; juveniles of first nest depart before parents finish second nest. Migrates via E coast of South I and W coast of North I, probably usually in single flight; juveniles arrive in winter quarters late Dec to early Jan and most adults mid-Jan to Feb; highest numbers present on N coast May-Jul; adults show high degree of site fidelity to wintering and roosting sites. Most birds leave wintering sites in Aug; second-year non- breeders leave half way through breeding season and some, mainly first-year birds, spend summer in North I. Uses stopover sites on return migration, and arrives at river mouths late-Aug to Sept.   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
