Aethia cristatella (Pallas, 1769) Family: Alcidae Order: Charadriiformes print version
Crested auklet Starique cristatelle Mérgulo empenchado Schopfalk
Migration: intercontinental unclear

Verbreitungskarte von Aethia cristatella Very little known of migratory movements. Autumn exodus occurs in Sept, but winter range poorly documented. Believed to be pelagic, remaining largely with in ice-free waters of breeding range except for movements SW to Japan and SE into Gulf of Alaska (Kodiak I region). Birds concentrated into flocks, often in large numbers, up to 15,000 birds, at predictably food-rich offshore locations. Reoccupation of colony areas begins in Mar through May, with first landings from late Apr (Aleutians) to early Jun (St. Lawrence I).   (del Hoyo J, Elliott A, Sargatal J (eds), 1996)
