N populations migratory, retreating S as sea freezes over, and mostly absent Nov-Feb. Further S dispersive,
ranging widely, but not usually reaching zones of warm water; regularly occurs S to Baja California. Young
birds may make transoceanic crossings and generally wander further than adults, which are less mobile. Has
occurred in Mediterranean, at Madeira and far inland in Czechoslovakia. (del Hoyo J, Elliott A,
